As he acknowledges now, earning the daily bread with his own hands and increasing its amount gradually has allowed him to realize the value of the money. He studied in the Riga Polytechnic Institute but declined the possibility to obtain the engineer’s diploma in the favour of own business and has never regretted his choice. Initially he cultivated roses, repaired cars and apartments, but in 1990/91 he participated in the foundation of the cooperative Skonto – nucleus of the latter powerful and extensive holding company.

Guntis Rāvis was responsible for the construction projects in the company and in 1991 he became the director of the cooperative Skonto Plan (this construction material production company is still operating), but in 1994 he started to manage also Skonto Būve. Since 2000 when the company was divided, he became the Chairman of the Board and owner of this construction company.

The greatest, closest to the heart of the entrepreneur and already fully completed charity intention is the restoration of the orthodox Cathedral of the Birth of Christ in Riga (2002-2014), which was undertaken by Guntis Rāvis and performed by Skonto Būve Ltd. with the support of the public. Guntis Rāvis himself donated half of the sum required to restore the cathedral – several hundred thousands of euros. Guntis Rāvis got the idea to render help by accident – the view from the upper floor windows of the hotel Reval Hotel Latvija, which was reconstructed by Skonto Būve Ltd., showed the miserable state of the church roof and he felt uncomfortable about himself and his country.
